Liesl Shurtliff defends graphic novels and those who read them in her book, The Dissident. ![]() Graphic novels have grown in stature and dynamic relevance over the years, and they have long been regarded as “just comics.” When a story is told consistently, the reader feels more at ease. A comic book must have a clear narrative in order for readers to understand what is going on. In a nutshell, narrative is all that is told. The ability of a writer to tell a story is what distinguishes great literature. This trend has, however, started to reverse in recent decades.Ī comic (also known as sequential art) is a type of visual art in which images are typically combined with text, whether through speech balloons or captions. Historically, comic books have been regarded as low-art, so they have frequently been dismissed by academics. Comics can not only entertain, but they can also provide a valuable tool for learning. Fans can now read indie comics or manga if they desire to.Ĭomics and graphic novels are a form of art that presents beautiful illustrations alongside engaging stories that touch the heart. It is common for artists to attempt both at the same time, resulting in a total shambles. If they want to copy manga or low- cost comics, they have no choice. With the exception of DC and Marvel, they have abandoned the art style. In the United States, the manga craze reached the peak in 2000, and Western cartoons and comics attempted to mimic the style. In The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller, Batman and The Joker are reimagined as two completely different characters with very sloppy art styles. In the mid-90s, the art style of comic books became more detailed and elaborate. As a result, the art in comic books often suffers. Finally, the art in comic books is often hampered by the low budgets that comic book publishers often have. Another reason is that the art in comic books is often restricted by the need to conform to a certain house style. One reason is that the artists are often not given enough time to produce high- quality art. There are a number of reasons why the art in comic books is so bad. Unfortunately, the art in comic books has often been criticized for being subpar. Since the dawn of comic books, art has been integral to the medium.
